Hedge planting – Gatwick Airport (NFM) project, River Mole

15/16th January 2025 - Calling Volunteers

Help plant a native hedgerow in the Upper Mole catchment.

Join us (South East Rivers Trust) at Baldhorns Park, Rusper, for a friendly, hands-on day planting a new native hedgerow — an important habitat for wildlife and a vital part of creating more flood-resilient landscapes.

This session is beginner-friendly and fully supported by our team.

The project is one example of SERT working collaboratively with landowners to safeguard communities downstream at risk of flooding by delivering a range of ‘slow the flow’ interventions in the Upper Mole catchment.

Natural Flood Management (NFM) techniques involve protecting, restoring and mimicking natural processes, to slow down the flow of water or temporarily hold it back, resulting in less runoff and more water storage in the headwaters.

By taking part, you’ll be contributing to practical, nature-based solutions that work with the landscape — a key part of how we protect communities and rivers across the River Mole catchment.

What to expect on the day
✅ A relaxed, welcoming volunteering session
✅ Clear guidance from our team throughout
✅ A chance to learn more about river restoration
✅ A visible, lasting impact by the end of the day

No previous experience needed — just a willingness to get stuck in.

Most volunteers stay for 2–3 hours, but you’re welcome to stay longer if you’d like.

Sturdy boots or wellies

Warm, weather-appropriate clothing

A packed lunch and water bottle
